Jeff's
World Tour - Downunder Oct 2005 (2) |
| Since the trip
overlapped a weekend I got to travel around the Auckland area a little
bit on the Saturday. My new friend Vanessa, who works for my friend
David, took me around to a bunch of galleries and out to see some real
scenery. It was a most excellent day. |
So Vanessa
arranged for us to meet with this artist, John Edgar, at his home/studio which
is probably close to Auckland but felt like it was out in the boondocks. The
driveway is amazing to start with, you go from seeing nothing but sky over the
end of the hood to looking straight down at the road through the windscreen.
Hard to capture the perspective through the lens....
His work
with glass and stone is unbelievable.... These in the boxes are 3" to 4"
across, the 'raw stock' he has stacked up there are approximately 6" squares.
Then we go
in the house and see that his wife is a supremely talented glass artist.
After that we headed up to the Auckland Museum and see some of John's large
scale work. And I do mean large scale. That spike must be 12 or 14 feet
tall!
Vanessa brought me out to Karekare and
then to Piha Harbour. The weather, unfortunately, was crap that day.
The wind was blowing insane and it might have gotten up to 50 degrees. No
tripod and little natural light means very few useful shots.
